Original Summary
A couple months ago I wanted so much more out of life, but my self-limiting beliefs kept holding me back. I'd scroll and get inspired by people speaking their thoughts so freely, then do nothing about it. I'd admire people building their dream bodies and tell myself I'd go to the gym tomorrow. I'd watch people build the life they wanted and think they had something inside of them that I didn't. The one thing I had going for me was curiosity. I kept looking for what these people had in common, and once I found it my life changed. It was meditation. Ray Dalio in finance, Rick Rubin in music, Michael Jordan in sports, all saying meditation changed their lives. I figured there had to be something behind it, so I tried it. At first it was bad. My phone addiction was so real I could barely sit alone with myself for 5 minutes. But I wanted something to change badly enough that I made it consistent, and things moved fast after that. Stuff that felt way out of reach started feeling like no big deal, and I actually started taking action. That's how I ended up with nearly 13,000 followers, my dream job out of college, and the confidence to put myself out there. Here's what I think is going on. When you're in a deep meditative state you start to really get that you're not your thoughts. You can watch them without reacting. That gives you space between a thought and your response to it. It sounds small, but most of what we do is driven by thoughts we don't even notice. Once there's distance there, you can look at your life a lot more objectively, without all the emotion attached. For me it also changed the voice in my head. When an idea shows up now, instead of "you're not enough" it's more like "why not you?" So I built an app called 808 Meditate to help people make meditation a habit, because that's the hard part. Everyone knows meditation is good for them. Almost nobody keeps doing it. The idea is simple. You have a meditation partner, a sloth named Otto. The more days you meditate, the happier he gets. Miss a day and he gets sadder. You also pick apps to block, and until you've meditated, opening one of them means a short conversation with Otto reminding you that you haven't meditated yet. Once you meditate, the blocks lift. The biggest thing I've learned building it: you don't need much. A small amount of friction at the exact moment you reach for your phone is enough to start changing the habit. Not a hard lock, just enough to make you stop and think. Curious if anyone here has built habit products. Did friction or rewards work better for you? submitted by /u/Rare_Escape_4132 [link] [comments]
