Original Summary
Hi everyone, I’m currently validating an idea for a web app and could really use some advice from developers/founders who have dealt with high-risk payments and "friendly fraud." The Concept: I’m building a real-time, competitive platform where users pay a small entry fee (e.g., $1–$5 for a ticket/participation) to join a specific digital event. Only one person wins the main reward, which means the vast majority of participants will "lose" their entry fee. The Problem: I haven’t integrated any payment gateways yet, but I’m very aware of the risks. Since users are paying for a chance to win, I expect angry users to try and initiate chargebacks (claiming they didn't authorize the payment or didn't receive the service) after they lose. From my research, payment processors like Stripe or local gateways hate this model. They often require rolling reserves, and worse, they slap you with $15-$25 fees for every chargeback. Since my product relies on micro-transactions ($1 to $5), a single chargeback fee would completely wipe out the profit from multiple users. My Questions for the Community: For those who have built similar platforms (competitions, micro-transactions, gaming events), how do you structure your card payments to survive chargebacks? Is enforcing strict 3D Secure enough to win disputes? Has anyone here gone the Crypto-only route (USDC/USDT) to completely bypass chargebacks? If you did, how bad was the drop in conversion rate? Would users actually be willing to pay $1-$5 in crypto (e.g., via low-fee networks like Base or Solana) to participate, or is the friction too high for mainstream adoption? Should I use a "Wallet / Store Credit" model (users deposit $10 upfront, then spend credits internally) to minimize the number of actual external transactions? Any insights, warnings, or recommendations on payment processors that are friendly to this model would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/Spirited_Artist6217 [link] [comments]
