Original Summary
Pooka is a Pokémon card collection app I build on my own. Before 2.0, every scan meant uploading a photo to my server, which then searched all the card images for the closest match. It worked, but it was slow on a bad connection and every scan cost server time. For 2.0 the whole thing runs on the phone. A small image model looks at the card and compares it against about 47,000 English and Japanese cards stored in the app, in around 15 MB. When a new set comes out, the app downloads only the new cards. The hardest part wasn't the model, it was the data. Nobody has real phone photos of 47,000 different cards, so I wrote a simulator that turns clean card scans into fake phone photos: different tables, angles, lighting, glare. To test it, I rendered cards in sleeves, toploaders and binder pages in Blender. The other surprise was reprints. About 13,700 groups of cards share the same artwork, so a scanner can be sure about the picture and still pick the wrong card. Pooka now only adds a card on its own when it's clearly ahead of everything with different art. Otherwise it shows the few candidates and lets you pick. The same release also scans a whole binder page, nine cards, in one photo. https://pooka.app submitted by /u/Raalders [link] [comments]
