Original Summary
Two months ago, a demo showing files being sent from one phone to another by pointing a camera at a stream of QR codes blew up. I asked Evan Crawley, the man behind this app, if he'd be willing to sit down with me. Some things that came out of the talk relevant to us builders: The transfer method wasn’t his main goal. He was building an offline MP3 player for his iPhone and wanted to send music to his wife's phone. Safari wouldn't let his web app receive files directly, and he didn't want to rely on a server. Claude agreed it couldn't be done without a server but he eventually realized that QR codes could work. Claude built a working prototype then relatively quickly. It worked around 2 AM, and he woke his wife to show her. He expected a couple hundred upvotes. It went viral on Reddit (7.6k upvotes now) but on Hacker News it got zero traction at first. A few hours later someone else posted it, and it hit the front page there too (I saw it on Linkedin too). Commenters pointed out that there were prior related projects. But that didn’t really curb the interest in this; and he thinks his method excels in speed. One of the things we walked away with is that the most interesting part of what you're building might be a component, not the finished product. This ~4 hour project got more attention than other projects he spent many more hours on. Full interview on my channel AppMunchies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piN7UjzihpI Thinking of turning this into a series. It's mostly uncut and pretty mellow. Let me know if you think this is of interest, and what else I should ask my guests next time. submitted by /u/n3rder [link] [comments]
