Original Summary

Solo dev, first app. Kanha went live on Google Play today. What it is: you read the Gita one verse at a time, in order. Each card has the real verse on the front and a short plain-English version with a longer explanation on the back. Tap to flip. It covers chapters 2 to 18, 605 cards. Chapter 1 and the start of chapter 2 are mostly scene-setting, so those are a short illustrated story instead of cards. The part I think matters for this sub: two months ago I posted the idea on r/ABCDesis . 12K people looked, and a lot of the replies were critical, and most of the criticism was right. The first version only had my own plain-English summaries, no real translation anywhere. Someone put my card for verse 2.18 next to the literal text: mine said "go do what's yours to do", the verse says "Fight therefore, O descendant of Bharata". Others asked whether AI wrote the content, and I had only answered about the art and the code. What I did about it: The front of every card is now the real verse, Swami Swarupananda's 1909 translation. It is public domain, so I can quote it exactly. I only changed "thou" and "hath" style words and left the rest alone. My wording sits on the back and is clearly separate. The translation I used first was still under copyright, so I replaced all of it a couple of weeks before launch. A second full read of every chapter against the source found real mistakes in my first pass, which I fixed. Straight answer on AI: the mascot and background art is AI-generated because I cannot draw, the code is partly AI-written, and the explanations on the back were drafted with AI help and reviewed by me. The front is a 1909 human translation. Other things: any verse becomes a 9:16 share image (the verse or the meaning, tap to swap the background and the mascot), there are small tap sounds with one switch to turn them off, and chapters unlock as you read. Two share images attached. If you are about to ship on Play: New personal developer accounts need a closed test with at least 12 testers for 14 days in a row before you can apply for production. Review then took about a week. Google Sign-In worked on every build I installed from Android Studio and failed on the Play Store one. Play re-signs your app with its own key, and that key's SHA-1 has to be added in Firebase. Found out today. Free with no ads for now. I have not figured out monetization and I would rather see what people use first. Android only, and you sign in with Google or email so progress follows you between phones. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kanha.gita&referrer=utm_source%3Dreddit%26utm_medium%3Dsocial%26utm_campaign%3Dsideproject What I most want feedback on: the first run is a 15-screen onboarding (name, goal, pace, a short story, a tutorial on a real verse, then sign-in). Is that too long? submitted by /u/Aggravating_Sun_7665 [link] [comments]
