I shared ZenSMS here earlier this month, but wanted to explain a bit more about who it’s for and how it handles spam. I wanted a normal SMS/MMS app without ads or trackers, with a few useful things like custom folders, keyword rules, and scheduled messages. So that’s what I’ve been building. ZenSMS works as your default Android SMS/MMS app. No analytics SDKs, no ZenSMS account, and no ZenSMS cloud copy of your messages. Optional Premium purchases help support development. It’s just me working on it. One thing worth explaining upfront is that spam filtering silences messages flagged as spam. It doesn’t hide them from your inbox (current behavior, will be implementing a more aggressive / quarantine behavior in future). You won’t get a notification, but they’re still visible when you open ZenSMS. That’s intentional. I’d rather you see some spam than miss an important text that got flagged by mistake. If you want to clear them out, open the Spam tab and tap Delete All. Just be aware that this permanently deletes them, they don’t go to Trash. If you only want to mark them as read, open Spam tab and switch back to Messages immediately. That marks the unread spam as read. Also, ZenSMS does not support RCS. If you rely on RCS group chats, read receipts, typing indicators, or Google Messages for web, it won’t replace those features for you. But if you mostly use SMS/MMS and want another option, that’s who I’m building it for. Reliability is my main focus right now, so fixing messaging issues comes before piling on more features.
