I teach diving in Borneo and Indonesia. After every dive, my students show me a photo and ask "what was that?", and half the time I had no idea either, even after fish identification courses or so many nights spending on the web searching. Field guides cover a fraction of what lives on a reef, and asking online means waiting hours for an answer. So I built SpeciX . You upload a dive photo and in under a minute it identifies up to 10 species in it. For each one you get: - the name and a confidence score - where it sits in the photo (tap a species, it gets framed) - recognition tips, so you can spot it yourself next time - a fun fact and its conservation status Every species you identify is added to "My Reef", your personal collection. Divers love filling it up, it works a bit like a Pokédex for the ocean. I built it solo over the last few months: Python and Streamlit for the app, Postgres for the species catalog, Stripe for payments, and names cross-checked against the GBIF and Wikidata taxonomy databases. The first identification is free, no card needed. After that it's €1.99 for 5, or subscriptions from €2.99 a month.
