I'm planning an Apple Music app for Android and the web called Whitetooth Music. iPhone people have Marvis Pro and a bunch of other options. On Android we basically have Apple's own app, and the web player isn't much better. You sign in with your own Apple Music subscription, so your library, playlists and full songs all work like normal. What I actually care about is the metadata Apple doesn't give you. Apple files 1989 under "Pop." In Whitetooth it'd be closer to Neon-Lit Retro-Synth Pop / Scandi-Pop New Wave Revival. Real Friends isn't "Alternative," it's Midwestern suburban emo pop-punk. Every album gets a subgenre, a scene, an era, a production style, and what it came out of or led to, and you can filter your library or the whole catalog by any of it. Every Midwest emo record from 2008 to 2014 that leans acoustic. Everything that's at least half shoegaze. Albums that switch genres halfway through. Other stuff I want to build on top of that: - search by the boring details too, like every album released on your birthday, only EPs, albums where every song is under 2 minutes, or everything from one label - a "hidden cuts" feed that digs up B-sides, demos and deluxe tracks from artists you already listen to - influence maps, so you can see what shaped your favorite bands and go listen to that - a playlist mode that shows the mood and energy arc of a playlist so you can fix the order - a feed of albums where Apple's genre and the real one are way off - your own listening history that keeps going for years, with an "on this day" and stats on which scenes and eras you're into - notes on any song, and a real desktop layout with sortable columns (release date, label, subgenre, runtime, whatever you want) About the tags: they're made with help from AI, but it only works from facts pulled from MusicBrainz and Discogs, anything it isn't confident about shows up as unverified, and you can correct tags yourself. It never sees anything about you or what you listen to, only info about the albums. Why it's free and open source. You already pay Apple every month, and that money is what pays for the music. If I put a paywall on top, I'd be charging you for access to music neither of us made and you already paid for. That's collecting rent, making money off something without adding anything to it, and I don't want to do that. A lot of what makes the app work isn't mine either. The genre and credit data comes from MusicBrainz and Discogs, which huge numbers of volunteers built and shared for free. Taking that and putting a price on it would be charging people for their own work. So the code will be public, anyone can run their own copy or build on it, and every feature is free for everyone.
