Six months ago I started CogniCore — an open-source memory layer for AI agents. The agent records what it tried, what failed, what worked, with evidence attached, so it stops relearning everything every session. Current stats, honestly: 69 GitHub stars. 12 forks. 13 downloads. Thirteen. I could stop telling people the last number and just let the stars speak — nobody would check. But I've spent weeks in open-source communities watching what happens to projects that curate their numbers, and I don't want to be that repo. What the gap actually taught me: Stars are applause, not adoption. People star things the way they bookmark articles — genuine intent, zero follow-through. Most of our stars came from design discussions I participated in on other projects' issue threads. Those same people have no reason to pip install yet. The mirror-number trap. PyPI shows ~160 downloads last month if you include mirrors — CI pulls, retries, cache artifacts. The real organic count is 13. Every "downloads" graph a dev tool shows you is the bigger number. Ours looks respectable if you squint. A fork is worth ~10 stars. Of the 12 forks, three came from people who then opened real technical discussions. One external contributor ran our whole system end-to-end, found where our claims outran our code, and wrote it up publicly — in public, on our tracker. This week a second contributor landed a float-serialization security fix in our repo after we accepted the finding in review, and a third independently verified our mem0 export PR on their own machine, on an OS we don't even run. Those three forks have done more for the project than every star combined. So the plan is unglamorous: keep shipping (a memory-transfer bridge to mem0 is in upstream review right now — fail-closed: you can't import an unverified bundle, period), keep the claims boring, and let the download number grow at whatever speed honesty allows.
