I get a ton of scam calls, so many that I send all unknown numbers to voicemail automatically. This sucks because there are a few legitimate calls that I miss. So I built an app to try to fight them more effectively. You can't block their number, they fake their caller ID and call from new numbers all the time. The number they can't fake is the callback number . It has to ring an actual phone the scammer controls, which means some carrier is hosting it and could shut it down if they cared or knew about it. So I built NumBan . You share a scam voicemail, it pulls out the callback number, works out who actually controls that number, and sends an abuse report to them. There's a bunch of plumbing on the back end to extract the phone number and then look up the carrier or responsible organization. Then, once we file report(s), we ping the number from time to time until we detect that it has gone dark. There's a leaderboard for reports and 'kills.' It's iOS only for now, but if there's interest I may expand it to Android. What I'd love feedback on: Would you actually bother reporting a scam voicemail if it took about 10 seconds? Would you want to see what happened to your reports afterward (number disconnected, etc.), or is sending it enough? Anything about the approach that seems naive?
