I've been going through a lot of launch directories lately, and a surprising number of them sell "backlinks" that are basically worthless. Here's how I check one now before paying: 1. Is the link actually dofollow? Open any existing listing, right-click the product's link, hit Inspect. If you see rel="nofollow" or rel="ugc", it passes almost no SEO value. Lots of directories are nofollow on free listings and only dofollow for paid ones, so check both. 2. Are the listing pages even indexed? Google site:thedirectory.com/some-product-name using a product they already list. If nothing shows up, Google isn't indexing their listings, and your link on that page is invisible. 3. What's the real DR? Ahrefs has a free website authority checker. A DR 70 directory is great. A DR 8 directory is mostly a nice gesture. 4. Does anyone actually visit it? Put it into Similarweb. High DR with zero visitors = SEO value, no signups. Low DR with real visitors = signups, little SEO. Know which one you're paying for. If a directory fails 1 and 2, skip it, however high the DR is. Disclosure since it's relevant: I just launched a small directory myself. It's early right now, so honestly the backlink from mine isn't worth much yet either.
