After a week inside a 12-hour audiobook I started thinking like the author, then it faded when the book ended. So I built ChannelThem: a group text with five AI characters inspired by historical figures (Franklin, Douglass, Twain, Austen, Augustine). They learn what you're working toward and help you take the next step. Great people rub off on you, and I believe everyone has the right to be influenced by great minds, regardless of when and where they were born. Stack is simple: Twilio for SMS, Make for the plumbing, Airtable for memory, an LLM for the conversation. What I learned this week: My welcome text killed signups. It was a paragraph describing the product. Nobody replied. Now Ben says hi and asks one question: "What's the next step you're trying to take?" Five voices at once is too many. People want one relationship first. Now Ben starts alone and the others drift in when the topic is theirs. Characters love to be quirky instead of useful.
