My sister (final year UDSM, Tanzania) needed to compress her CV from 3MB to 1MB for a government job portal. She used SmallPDF and got hit with a $9 paywall. $9 is a week's food budget there. I was pissed. So I spent 2 weeks building an alternative. GridPDF.com - What it is: - 28 PDF tools (merge, split, compress, Word to PDF, etc) - 100% client-side. No file ever leaves your device. You can turn off WiFi after loading the page and it still works. - No backend. Hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Cost: $0/month. - No account, no paywall, no tracking. Tech: Vanilla JS + PDF-lib + pdfjs. Everything runs in browser via Web Workers. No server to leak your ID docs. I built it in Dar es Salaam with daily power cuts. It's not perfect, but it solves a real problem for students in my country. Would love feedback from fellow devs, especially on compression quality and mobile UX.
