After more than a year of working on it, a travel app I co-founded called Connava was recently approved for the App Store. The idea actually started while I was studying abroad. Being overseas made me want to explore more, but I kept running into the same problem: I knew I wanted to travel, but I didn’t always know where I should go next. I could search Google, scroll through Instagram or TikTok, or look through lists of popular destinations, but I usually ended up choosing somewhere because it was well known rather than because it genuinely fit what I wanted from the trip. I wanted a way to consider things like my interests, the activities I wanted to do, budget, travel pace, climate, and how far I was willing to travel. That eventually became Connava. The idea is pretty simple: help people go from “I want to travel, but I don’t know where” to discovering destinations that actually fit them. I’m one of two people building it, so it’s still early. You can discover and match with destinations based on your preferences rather than just popularity, explore food, excursions, and local experiences, and hear from other travelers who’ve actually been there. One part we’re especially interested in is the marketplace. Instead of relying only on established tour companies, we want locals and people who genuinely know a destination well to be able to share experiences they can offer travelers — and earn income from that local knowledge. For travelers, the hope is that this opens the door to more authentic experiences while allowing more of what they spend to directly support people in the places they’re visiting. We’re essentially trying to bring the parts of travel that normally happen across several different apps — getting inspired, discovering where to go, learning from other travelers, and finding things to do — into one place. I’d especially love to hear from people who travel frequently or travel solo: How do you usually decide where to go when you know you want to travel but don’t already have a destination in mind? And would experiences offered directly by knowledgeable locals be something you’d use?
