I think the user experience is better on desktop vs mobile, but the mobile experience isn't bad. After building this out over the past month or so, I showed it to my 9yo nephew Roman this past weekend, and he flipped! He loves it and has been using it every day to learn about a new civilization. Click on any region to reveal the ancient civilizations within, and then click on any civilization to see 20-50 events that define its rise and fall. (You can also click into any event to see even more details on it.) I think it's really important for kids to be curious about other cultures – not only outside their physical borders, but also cultures outside their own time . I think it helps them see that humanity has been just as complex and sophisticated across the millennia as we are now, and it gives them a different perspective about "how we got here"... In fact, if you scroll down the civilizational side bar list, I actually have a section at the very bottom called "How We Got Here" with 106 events that connect across time to bring us to present day. Why 106 moments? Because the average human lifespan is 70 years, and the first Sumerian settlement of Eridu was settled around 5400 BCE... so that's about 106 lifespans that encompass ALL of known civilizational history. Every single story you've ever heard, every king or queen, every battle, every invention, every voyage, every adventure... it all happened in the span of just 106 great-grandparents holding their great-grandchildren. It's all so recent! So I've handpicked 106 events throughout history that I think are deeply intertwined, that create a throughline that we may not always pick up on or teach kids about (e.g., Genghis Khan -> Marco Polo -> Mehmet II -> Christopher Columbus). Human history is deeply interconnected, and I think this site helps it all come alive and feel more relevant to life today. As for some constructive self-criticism, I think my personal understanding of history is too Euro-centric, and I want to add more civilizations in Africa, the Americas, and Asia.
