Original Summary
Why do we keep overspending even when we already know our budget? I have been thinking about this a lot lately. I used to set a budget for things like eating out, shopping, or entertainment and genuinely feel like I was doing the responsible thing. For example: ₹3,000 monthly food budget. Then: ₹180 here. ₹250 there. ₹320 because I was tired and did not want to cook. Nothing felt particularly bad at the time. But by the end of the month, I would spent ₹4,000+. And the weird part was that I already knew my limit. It made me realize that budgeting isn't always a knowledge problem. Sometimes there is just no moment where something actually makes you stop and think: "Wait, I am going over." That is what got me experimenting with a slightly different idea. I am a developer, and I ended up building a personal finance app around this problem. One of the features I added is an optional AI "roast" when you go over a budget. Not financial advice. Not shaming. More like a friend saying: "Your budget was ₹3,000 and you have spent ₹3,450. I am not angry, I am just disappointed. 😂" The idea is that a boring notification gets ignored, while something that makes you pause for two seconds might actually create some awareness. I am still trying to figure out whether this is genuinely useful or just a gimmick. Do you think a little humor would make you more conscious of overspending, or would you immediately turn it off? submitted by /u/Old_Adhesiveness7812 [link] [comments]
