Original Summary
Spoke to three AEO experts (across owned, earned, and social) to get a holistic sense of what it actually takes to successfully do AEO in 2026. For anyone tracking citations, you know how volatile citation data can look, spiking one day, going dark the next, rendering most short-term strategies obsolete. This is what real experts in the field are recommending: Owned: “content structure and prompt research for sure are the most important… on one hand you’re trying to provide more info than competing articles (replace the source)… but on the other hand, you want LLMs to have a clear, direct answer to cite/recommend you... and thorough prompt research is key to doing that” Earned: “I’d say earned citations on high-authority surfaces and review sites… but underneath that is a lot of cross-collaboration… you might need to help create ownable assets like research studies that other folks in your space will want to cite… and stay in lock-step with social to identify third-party coverage on highly-cited social surfaces like YouTube and LinkedIn.” Social: “think about it this way, these models need social to have taste, relevance, timely info, and cultural nuance. Social isn’t going anywhere, and we’ve only seen the share of social citations grow… BUT content volume isn’t the fix. Focus on shares, saves, and reposts… this means the content you’re making is valuable and clear (also citable to AI), it also increases the likelihood of third-party brand mentions, which AI trusts far more than owned channels. just continue to constantly experiment with different formats, track movement in citations, and iterate” submitted by /u/Agitated_Yak2066 [link] [comments]
