Everyone on my team uses Claude Code. Nobody knew what it cost. The bill just arrived each month and we'd wince. So I built tokken — each machine runs a small collector that reads local usage and syncs the totals. Dashboard shows spend by person, device, model and day. What we found in the last 30 days across 11 engineers: - $33,743 total, 42.2B tokens - Top spender $9,380, median $2,481, lowest $445 — a 21x spread - 97.7% of all tokens are cache reads - Opus 5 alone is 66% of tokens The 21x spread was the surprise. It isn't seniority — it's working style. Long agentic sessions vs short targeted prompts. Some things I learned building it: The hard part isn't the dashboard, it's trusting the numbers. Our tracker was silently under-reporting by 3.4x for three days because the tool it reads from went blind after an update — it exited 0 and printed a valid but shorter report, so a broken machine looked exactly like someone on holiday. Now every collector reports its own health, and they update themselves over the air so I never have to ask 11 people to paste a command again.
