Original Summary
Disclosure: I'm the founder of the product I'm describing. No link, I'm posting because I think the problem is relevant to anyone here thinking about their model. My product is a Mac dictation app that runs fully offline. The whole pitch is the anti-SaaS one: one-time $49 purchase, no account, no server, nothing leaves the device. Privacy-focused users like that, and it's a real differentiator against subscription competitors. But a few weeks after launch I'm seeing the downside of that model. I have around 50 trial downloads and zero purchases, and I have no idea why. No signup means no email, no onboarding sequence, no usage data, no way to ask anyone what went wrong. Everything a normal SaaS would use to diagnose this, I removed on purpose. Curious how people here think about it: If you were in my place, what's the minimum you'd add to learn from users without breaking the "no account" promise? Has anyone here moved from subscription to one-time (or the other way) and seen conversion change? Is a one-time price actually a selling point for buyers, or mostly something founders care about? Would love to hear from anyone who has dealt with a privacy-first or offline product. submitted by /u/laaeel [link] [comments]
