I've spent about 30 years in games (sales, marketing, running LAN events) but never shipped anything I coded myself. Now that I'm mostly retired, I wanted to build something that could earn a little income for the long haul. So I learned to build an Android app. The problem: about ten months ago, a podcast host raved about a sandwich shop in Toronto. I made a mental note to go. Then I rented a car for a couple of day trips and drove past it four times , twice at lunchtime, and never thought to stop. I hadn't forgotten it. It just didn't come to mind at the one moment it would have been useful. The app: PazBy. Pin a place and add a note. When you're actually nearby, your phone taps you on the shoulder, or says it out loud: "Arrived at the pharmacy. Pick up the prescription." Build notes, for anyone curious: Kotlin, Android only, solo No server and no account. Everything stays on the phone, and backups go to your own Google Drive. The hardest part was battery life. I built a "gearbox" that checks GPS less often when you're sitting still and more often when you're moving. I incorporated, went through Google Play's closed-testing requirement, and launched this summer. Business model: $2.99 once. Competitors charge $36–80 a year, and I'd rather people just own it. Where I'm at: it's live, installs are low, and I'm learning marketing for my own product instead of someone else's (humbling). I'd love feedback on the app, the pitch, or both.
