In 2015 I released Flinder, a small iPhone app for the "so… what do you want to do?" moment. It checks your local time and the weather, then shows you things to do one idea at a time. You swipe through, tap one that sounds good, and see places nearby with photos and a map. On a sunny afternoon you get parks and ice cream. On a rainy evening you get things like bowling and karaoke. Late at night it's bars and clubs. It's had a strange life since then: 2015: v1. Built it, shipped it, fixed a crash on launch, moved on. 2018: rebuilt from scratch, added swiping, saving and sharing. 2019–2025: basically untouched. It stayed on the App Store and people kept opening it anyway. 2025: came back to it and shipped v3. This week: v4.0, the biggest update so far. What's new in 4.0: Any city: set a city and see ideas for its local time and weather, which is useful before a trip. Saved places: organized into a folder per city, plus a recently-viewed list. Visuals: full-screen photos and a bigger map. Shake to restart: shake your phone to start over. The core of the app is free: no account, no ads, and your saved places stay on your phone. 4.0 also adds Flinder Pro, for unlimited cities and saved places. It's available as a subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase. More than 8,000 people have used it, which still surprises me for an app I ignored for six years.
