I'm a software engineer, backend and DevOps mostly, and I had never touched mobile. During my PhD I recorded every meeting with my supervisors and never listened to them again. The transcription apps I found were expensive and all of them send your audio to the cloud, so at some point I thought, why don't I try to build it myself? With AI everything goes faster now, for better or worse, and I wanted to use it to learn something new and ship something of my own. That's Scribbler. It's a transcription app for iPhone that runs entirely on the phone. You give it a video or audio file, or record live, and you get a document where every word keeps its timestamp: tap a word and the player jumps there, fix a wrong word in place, search, export. It sits in the share sheet too, so a WhatsApp voice note becomes text in two taps. It can also translate the transcript still on the phone. My tests started with Whisper running on the phone (fantastic piece of work). Then Apple shipped SpeechAnalyzer with iOS 26, it was about 5x faster in my tests and better in Italian, so I threw away the Whisper code and built on that. Whisper is good but for a newbie mobile developer its hard to manage. SpeechAnalyzer still makes mistakes, around 2% word error in English and 10% in Italian, my language, so I spent a lot of time on the editor instead of pretending the text is perfect. Pro: less battery and thermal consumption. Where I am: two and a half weeks live, about 70 downloads, a handful of paying users, and a new habit of refreshing App Store Connect ten times a day to watch the numbers moving. I don't know exactly from where the users came (Instagram reel or App Store). I'm still practicing with the Search Optimization and Ads. Building it turned out to be the easy part.
