Original Summary

This started because I wanted a simple game I could play with my wife and kids. Something like: “I’m looking at something you can’t see. What do you think it is?” That was basically the entire idea. Then I started wondering how you could turn that into an actual game without immediately ruining the simplicity. And, as side projects tend to do, things escalated. It’s now called Find the Signal. A hidden target has attributes like color, shape, quantity, etc. Players commit to their guesses before revealing it and score the attributes they got right. There’s Solo, Multiplayer, and Teams. Targets are drawn from a finite deck without replacement, which creates a little strategy because observant players can remember what has already appeared. There’s also a limited Double Down for those moments when you’re unusually confident about one part of your guess. But the thing I’ve probably obsessed over most is everything AROUND the game. I didn't want accounts. I didn't want ads. I didn't want Google Analytics. I definitely didn't want to build profiles of people playing a goofy intuition game with their families. So each new game gets a random Game ID and sends a deliberately small amount of anonymous game-level telemetry: things like rounds played, score, mode, progression and whether the session was completed. Names stay on the device. Individual scores stay on the device. Guesses and targets aren't sent. The philosophy I ended up with is: “Mysterious about the phenomenon. Radically transparent about the data.” And: “We study the game, not the players.” I also created r/FindTheSignalLab so people can compare results, argue about whether any of this means anything, suggest experiments, and eventually look at aggregate beta data together. The first 500 people who complete 3 rounds get a sequential Founder Mark (#001–#500), mostly because I wanted some way to recognize the strangers willing to test this weird little thing while it’s still being figured out.
