Been working on a Chrome extension for a while and I’m at the point where I can’t tell anymore if it’s actually useful or if I’ve just been staring at it too long 😅 The idea came from something I kept doing all the time. I’d be on LinkedIn, Reddit, Gmail, X, whatever… see something I wanted to reply to, copy it, open ChatGPT, explain the context, ask for a reply, copy that back, edit it so it doesn’t sound robotic, then finally post it. After doing that enough times I thought, why isn’t the AI just where I’m already typing? So I started building WriteFlow AI. It basically adds a small AI writing/rewrite tool inside text fields on websites. The more interesting part for me is context instead of just asking “write me a reply”, it can look at the post/message you’re responding to and help come up with something that actually fits. At the moment it can do things like rewrite what you’ve typed, change tone, suggest reply angles, help with emails, translate text, etc. I’m also experimenting with personalization because one thing I really don’t like about AI writing tools is when every reply sounds like the same overly polished LinkedIn person. It’s BYOK right now too, so you use your own OpenAI / Anthropic / Gemini key. I liked that approach because I didn’t want people’s prompts going through my own server, although I’m starting to wonder if asking normal users to deal with API keys is too much friction. That’s probably the part I’m most unsure about. Still very much testing it, not really doing a big launch yet. For people who already use ChatGPT/Claude for writing stuff online would having it directly inside the text box actually be useful to you? And more importantly, what would make you not install something like this? I’d genuinely rather hear the reasons it’s a bad idea than get polite “looks cool” feedback.
