Original Summary

the thing that shaped my QR code product more than anything was a story i kept hearing: someone prints 400 business cards, puts a QR code on the back, and two weeks later a colleague tells them the code routes to an error page with a subscription prompt. the trial expired while the cards were still out there. that's the dark pattern at the core of this category. your printed materials become the ransom note and the code is the hostage. cancel, and your codes die. downgrade, and your codes die. the platform knows you have 10,000 product boxes in the wild with that QR code on them, and they know you can't recall them. so when i started building, the first design decision was: codes keep working after cancellation. downgrade from paid to free, your codes keep redirecting. cancel entirely, they still redirect on the free tier. the worst case is a small watermark, not a dead code that tanks your printed collateral. the tradeoff is real. you give up the primary retention lever most SaaS relies on, which is fear. people stay subscribed because they're terrified their codes will break. remove that fear and you lose some forced retention. but what i found is that the fear isn't keeping people loyal to a specific platform, it's keeping them away from the entire category. i talked to small business owners who refused to use dynamic QR codes at all because they'd been burned by a trial trap before. the hostage model doesn't create stickiness, it creates distrust. the bet is that being the tool that doesn't hold your prints hostage earns enough trust to offset the lost forced retention. no credit card required to start, codes that survive cancellation, a free tier that's actually usable instead of a 14-day trial dressed up as "free." i don't know if this is the right long-term play yet. but every QR SaaS i looked at had the same model: gate the redirect behind a subscription, kill it when the money stops. i just couldn't build the same thing. full disclosure: i'm building a QR code platform that works this way, so take this with a grain of salt. but the design decision itself is one i think applies beyond QR codes to any SaaS where the user creates something physical that outlives the subscription. submitted by /u/Natebald603 [link] [comments]
