I kept reaching for a different comparison tool depending on the input. Text was easy, but release folders, archives, PDFs, spreadsheet files and structured data all needed separate workflows. I built Diff Anything to put those comparisons in one desktop app. Folder comparison shows added, removed, changed and moved paths, with search and status filters for larger trees. Changed files can be opened in the appropriate comparison view instead of stopping at “these bytes differ.” Archive comparison supports ZIP, ZIP64, ZIPX, 7z, RAR, TAR and compressed streams. Paths are normalized and contents are hashed while streaming, so member order, timestamps and compression settings don’t create false content changes. It also handles encrypted and multipart archives. PDFs can be compared visually or by extracted text. Spreadsheet comparison works across XLSX, ODS, Numbers, CSV and TSV. JSON, YAML, XML and API schemas are parsed before comparison, while Smart Diff handles code and text across 117 languages. Everything is processed locally.
