Original Summary
I've been strugglig with my high screen time, lately as well as the last few years. Most of my 8 (EIGHT!!!) hours of daily screen time on days where I didn't have to do much were spent scrolling my life away, on Tiktok, Instagram and you name it. I tried breaking out of the chains I put myself into, but no matter what I tried, it didn't work for long: I activated greyscale --> I disabled it for "just a moment" and fell right back into the hole I deleted the apps --> I felt disconnected and my FOMO became too strong I tried new hobbies --> after a few days, the urge to scroll returned and I couldn't make it off the couch I installed an app blocker --> My friends sent me a video and I wanted to open it, disabled the blocker just for this video and got right back to doomscrolling So I built my own app blocker Dam It! , which lets you watch a video your friend sends without pulling you into your endless feed. With this tool I first only built for myself, I finally got out of the endless cycle and dropped my daily screen time to around 3 hours. Realizing others face the exact same struggle, I made the app public. Since it was originally designed for myself, it collects zero data and works directly with your regular apps, meaning you don't have to change your routine or delete anything. You can now try the app on Google Play for free and see if this approach works for you in the long run. If you have any ideas on how to optimize it or feedback on the concept please leave a comment, I'd really appreciate your thoughts! submitted by /u/cornconstant [link] [comments]
