Every gig app tracks one thing: the trip. Pickup → dropoff. Everything between trips — driving to a hotspot, repositioning after a dead zone, the long ride home at 2am — I call those ghost miles: business miles you actually drove but never logged. They're invisible in the platform's yearly report, so they never make it to your tax return. At the 2026 IRS rate (76¢/mile), a full-time driver's miles add up to roughly $19K a year in tax deductions. To be clear, that is NOT cash in your pocket — it lowers your taxable income, which at typical gig brackets works out to roughly $2,700–$4,000+ less in actual tax. Still real money.
