n December 2024 I was lying in bed with a broken arm. Coding with LLMs was becoming the thing everybody talked about, and since I have a dev background (plus some years in fintech), I decided to build my own tipping app. It's called tippin' and it's made for Polish market. Everyone gets a personal tip page and a QR code. The customer scans it, picks an amount and pays with BLIK (the Polish mobile payment thing), a card, Apple / Google / Revolut Pay. If you're in the US, this probably sounds like a solved problem, because there the card terminal just asks you for a tip. In Poland it often doesn't. People increasingly pay by card and don't carry cash, so the tip simply doesn't happen. And a lot of restaurant owners don't want to get involved in tips at all: once tips go through the venue's terminal, on paper it's the venue's money and the venue's accounting headache. tippin' keeps the owner out of it. The tip goes from the guest straight to the waiter's own account, and nobody has to split cash from a jar at the end of the shift. I started with nothing but the Claude.ai chat, copying code back and forth. Then I moved to Windsurf, and for about a year now it's been almost entirely Claude Code. The first working version took under two weeks. Stack is Next.js, Vercel, Firebase and Stripe Connect. Building turned out to be the easy part. For the first year I was mostly chasing the first customers: Google Ads, links dropped in Facebook groups, and an Instagram account I barely posted on. No viral moment, no big launch. Around the one-year mark it just started to click, and last month was the first month where tippin' made what I'd call real money. Not quit-my-job money, but real. Since February I've been paying someone to run the Instagram, and I've done a few partnerships with people in the industry. Most of my users work in hospitality, but there are also beauty salons and content creators. That mix is kind of the point. I wanted one app for all of it, not three: a personal tip page and QR code, printed or shown on your phone team accounts for restaurants and salons, where the venue decides whether tips go to the waiter or to the venue OBS widgets for streamers: tip alerts with text-to-speech, a goal bar, message moderation and an on-screen QR code. Works with Twitch, YouTube and Kick 6 languages: Polish, English, Ukrainian, Belarusian, German, Spanish. Picked on purpose: those are the languages of the people who actually work in Polish restaurants and salons, plus the tourists who tip them No subscription and 0% commission on tips. The only fee is Stripe's (1 PLN + 1.6%), and the person tipping can choose to cover it. tippin' lives off an optional "support tippin'" amount on top of the tip, which you can switch off with one click.
