Original Summary
I've spent the past weeks digging through Hacker News looking for unmet needs, and a few things surprised me: Engagement isn't pain. In my testing, the most upvoted threads were often discussions, not people describing a problem. The best signals were explicit phrases like "I wish there was a tool that…" and step-by-step manual workarounds. Many "pain" threads are launch posts. Show HN posts often open with a frustrated backstory, but the thing is already built. Filtering those out changed my rankings a lot. The best evidence of a gap: someone names the tool they currently duct-tape together and says what it misses. That tells you who you'd compete with and where they're weak. Recency matters. A complaint from 2018 may already be solved. [add your own observation here] Quick manual version: search HN for "[niche] + is there a tool / wish / frustrating", sort by date, and read comments, not just titles. What signals do you trust when validating a niche? And which ones do you ignore? submitted by /u/kr1shka [link] [comments]
