A couple of years ago, my wife's birthday was coming up and I wanted to do something more memorable than dinner and a gift. She's always loved puzzles, so I thought: what if I set up a scavenger hunt around the city — clues at places that meant something to us? I spent a week hand-writing clues, coordinating with a few café owners, and obsessively double-checking the logic so nothing would break mid-hunt. It was a lot of work, but watching her follow the trail and finally land at her surprise ending was one of the best moments we've had. Afterward, a few friends asked if I could set one up for them. Then a few more. I realized the manual process — writing clues, managing GPS locations, handling multi-stop logistics — was genuinely painful to repeat. So I started building Scavenge.rs as a side project. A platform where you can build a custom scavenger hunt: add clues tied to real locations, set up a progression flow, and share a link with participants who follow along on their phones. It's been used for: - Date nights (the original use case) - Bachelorette parties - Team building events - Kids' birthday parties - Even a marriage proposal The wild part is how creative people get once the logistics aren't in the way. I've seen hunts that span entire cities, and ones confined to a single apartment building for a rainy-day activity. Still very much a side project — I work on it in the evenings and weekends — but it's hit a point where people are actually using it for real moments, which is a weird and great feeling.
