A year ago I got annoyed enough at my own screen recordings to start building a tool. Today it’s a real app, and people are starting to pay for it! It’s called Prequel. You hit record on your Mac, a teleprompter opens up with your script and follows your voice so you don't fumble, do the thing, hit stop, and the video comes out already edited. It zooms where you clicked. Your cursor gets redrawn so it moves smoothly instead of the way your hand actually moved. Your webcam gets cut out and placed over the recording. There’s a teleprompter that follows your voice, and captions you fix by editing the text. Everything runs on your Mac and it’s open source. Why not just use Screen Studio, CleanShot or Loom? Fair question, I used all three. Prequel is $29 once. They’re subscriptions. Prequel is open source. They’re closed. Prequel never uploads unless you click Share. Loom uploads everything. Prequel cuts you out of your webcam and places you over the recording. They give you a bubble. Prequel has a teleprompter that follows your voice. None of them do. Prequel transcribes on your Mac and you edit the captions as text. Delete a sentence, the footage goes with it. Prequel tilts the zoom in perspective and blurs what isn’t the subject. Theirs is a flat crop. Prequel redraws the cursor with 15 styles, smoothing and motion blur. CleanShot and Loom record your actual shaky hand.
