I built a to-do app and hit some roadblocks along the way. I'm still learning, but here's what I have learned so far, that cost me time and money that I'd rather not have wasted. For example, if you publish on Play store under your own name, you need 12 testers for two weeks before release. With an LLC, you don't. I'm the maker of ProgressCove . As a full time worker, father of two boys who also enjoys numerous hobbies, I always found myself overloaded with tasks that I lose track of. I had a long adventure with many to-do apps and needless to say, I started my own after none of them had the feature set I really needed. In my over six months of adventure so far, here's what I learned: LLC or Personal: First few pointers about why it's better to have an LLC if it's a business you're looking to grow. If you use an LLC, you do not need to expose your personal information anywhere. App/Play Store is going to need your name and address, and last thing you need is an angry customer chasing you for any reason. (Of course best to keep customers happy, but people can be hard to predict). If you have an LLC, Play Store will let you release your app whenever you like. If you are using your own name, then you need to wait two weeks and have 12 testers testing the app. You can easily get twelve testers from fiverr for around $50 or even some subreddits have people helping each other for free. But sometimes all you really need is a couple testers using it in and out for a day or two and patience is thin at this stage of the cycle. If you will start an LLC, start by getting a registered agent mailbox first. I used physicaladdress since it provided what I need at best prices, but any one of them should work. I started LLC before getting a registered agent, and that cost me because I had to pay for the paperwork to change the address. Waste of money for a small startup. Last but not least, the infamous DUNS number. You're going to need it if you're a company, and even though this step can take a while (mine was about 3 weeks), still do it right, and perform the steps above first. You don't want your personal address on your DUNS record. App Store Review Issues: I see many app developers here mention going back and forth with app store support, and it's real. Many traps are easy to avoid and here's what I ran into: Paywall clarity: You have to be very specific about what's behind paywall. In my case, after trial expires, everything except settings page is behind paywall, so I assumed it was clear enough. It wasn't. I had to write that they had to subscribe to keep using the app past trial window. Date of birth check: I had a DOB check to ensure user is old enough so I don't run into any legal issues due to information collected.
