Original Summary
Hey everyone, I've been building a pricing calculator tool for makers and bakers (people selling handmade stuff on Etsy/Shopify). When building the onboarding, I really hated the idea of forcing an email signup before someone even sees the product. So I set it up so anyone can use the entire calculator right away as a guest. All their inputs, materials, and recipes just save directly in their browser using localStorage. If they want to sync across devices or use the spreadsheet import feature, they create a free cloud account (Supabase). And then there's an 8.99/mo Pro tier for unlimited recipes and exports. The problem is, guest mode works so well that I feel like I'm shooting myself in the foot. People land on the site, calculate their pricing, get their answer, and leave. Because everything persists locally, a lot of casual users have zero reason to ever create an account or give me an email, which means I can't follow up with them at all. For anyone who's built tools or micro-apps with a guest/sandbox mode: Did you find that adding an email wall upfront killed your traffic, or did it actually help you get higher quality paying users? Would you keep it frictionless or force a signup to save the calculation? Would love to hear how you handled this trade-off. submitted by /u/No_Basket_7371 [link] [comments]
