What happens when a gamer wants to be productive, but also wants to play games? Who says we can't have both! Introducing, gamepal! It's a tiny pixel cat that lives in the corner of your screen while you play ranked. I built it after watching a few too many shorts, and seeing these "For every ranked game I lose, I do something productive" videos everywhere. I wanted to try it out for myself - but being the fella I am, I had to make a fun way to do so first. This is how I came up with gamepal. Here's how it works: Run it in the background between your games of league of legends, cs, or whatever you prefer. When you lose (or win), you open gamepal and tell mochi (the cat) how your match went. If you lose, it asks you to do something productive like working on a project, reading a book, or doing chores. After doing tasks for a bit of time, you earn stars! Stars can be used to purchase rewards for yourself (out of "game") which you can set to be exactly what you want. For me, I like being able to buy myself whatever new indie game just dropped. That's it really. Here are three things I learned building it (with some assistance from our pal Claude): ★ Electron is pretty cool. It lets you run web technologies as a desktop app. I learned this also what Discord uses, which I had no idea they did before this project 🤯 ★ The first-time user experience matters a ton. I ended up creating a guided tutorial through each part of the app, but each step only occurs once the user naturally triggers the event for it. ★ A mascot is not always a good idea. I was a bit worried that in this case, the mascot (Mochi), might cause friction for the user and the use-case. However, most testers seemed to enjoy the added cuteness and it became a bit of a selling point in the end - so I kept it!
