The morning it happened I thought Search Console was broken. Impressions had been climbing all summer, then over three days in August the graph fell off a cliff: 4,539 a day down to 328, average position from 10.8 to 52. No manual action. Nothing to appeal. Every page still indexed, just moved to page five where nobody lives. The first thing I did was what everyone does. I ran the audits. A technical crawler scored the site 10 out of 10. Core web vitals green. Sitemaps valid, canonicals fine, schema fine. That same week the site ranked for 0 of the 20 keywords I track. I stared at those two facts next to each other for a long time. The tools measure hygiene. Google had demoted the site for something hygiene can't see. Here's what the site was. Reviews of open source tools, 4,500 pages in six weeks, all off one template. Solid, accurate, structured, and interchangeable with what anyone else could produce. When I finally pulled the numbers properly, 1,719 of 2,345 pages had zero impressions in 28 days. Google hadn't punished bad pages. It had decided the whole set was the same page. The one thing the tools did catch, they caught by accident. Digging through server logs I found robots.txt had returned a 502 to crawlers 114 times in two weeks, every time the app restarted, because it was being served by the app instead of the web server. A 5xx on robots.txt tells a crawler to stop crawling the whole site until it can read the file again. So on top of the demotion I'd been telling Google and Bing to go away three times a day. Fixed in an hour. Nobody's checklist had it. What I changed after that wasn't the copy. It was the source of the copy. Instead of describing a tool, I run it in a sandbox first, install it, execute the tests, measure install time and size, and the page prints those numbers. 3,105 runs so far. It's slower and more expensive and it's the only thing that makes a page something another site can't produce. Six weeks in: impressions doubled, roughly 370 a day to 840. Clicks didn't. Still near zero on most days. So either it's working slowly or I'm rebuilding a house on the same sand. I genuinely don't know yet, and I'm posting this before I know, because the "how I recovered" version of this post is the one you'd never be able to trust. For anyone else hit in August: did anything actually move for you, and what was it? I've read a hundred threads about the update and I've yet to see one person show the before and after with the change named.
