I’m a product designer, and I started Moolo because I wanted to see whether I could design, build and ship a real app with Claude Code. The idea came from looking at my expenses and realizing that knowing I spent $84 at a grocery store didn’t tell me much. I wanted to know what I actually bought, how much each product cost and whether those prices changed over time. Moolo lets you photograph a receipt, review the extracted items, prices and taxes, and save everything as searchable spending data. You can then see spending by store or category, search for previous purchases and build shopping lists from things you regularly buy. What began as a small personal experiment became much more involved once I tried to make it a real product. Reading receipt text was only part of the problem. Grocery receipts are full of abbreviations, so turning something like “GV MLK 2%” into a useful product name required a separate step. That also made the review and correction screen much more important than I initially expected. The current version is free, with no ads, subscriptions or in-app purchases. It doesn’t require an account, and saved receipts live on the phone. Scanning does send the receipt photo to an AI service so it can be read, which the app explains before the first scan.
