If you're anything like me, you miss the old days of the wild internet, before everything got consolidated into a handful of sites making a fortune collecting everyone's data. We might not be able to reverse the enshittification of the internet, but we can at least save the fun, quirky, creative sites that are still out there. I've tried a handful of bookmark managers to keep track of all the sites I've saved, but nothing worked intuitively like I wanted it to. So I figured I'd build it myself. Webtop organizes your bookmarks on a new, second desktop for the web that follows you from device to device, complete with draggable icons, nested folders, and custom backgrounds. This demo shows a really simple webtop, just to demonstrate some of what you can do with it. Here's a non-exhaustive list of Webtop's features: - Create bookmarks and folders, and organize them however you want. Bookmark icons are set by the favicon of the site linked to, but both bookmark and folder icons can be changed from a list of emojis. - Folders open in resizable windows you can sort and switch between list and grid view, and they stay where you left them. - Share bookmarks and folders with other users - including live folders you can each add to, so a collection can be a joint project instead of a copy. - Full privacy controls - you decide who can see what you've saved. You can keep it totally private, share it just with exactly who you want to, or make it public. - A search bar to search your webtop, or hand the query off to the search engine of your choice. - Locked folders with custom passwords/pins - even someone who has access to your webtop will need the password to access them. - Custom webtop backgrounds. Users can select from a list of solid colors or upload images of their own. - A full-featured mobile mode for use on your phone (just in browser for now, mobile apps are a future consideration). Note: Some of the features shown - namely locked folders and custom background images - are gated behind a paid subscription. I wanted to provide the core utility for free, and then recoup hosting/domain/etc. fees from users willing to pay for some of the more "bonus" features. Pricing starts at $3.98/month.
