Original Summary
Just a thought occurred to me after a recent post here about Ai slops projects. Not to agree or disagree with anything. What if discovering cool GitHub projects worked more like a dating app? The idea is Slop or Slap. You sign in with GitHub, choose some of your repositories to showcase, and then get a completely random deck of projects built by other developers. You swipe: 👈 SLOP — not interested / not for me / Slop 👉 SLAP — this is interesting / I want to check it out The important part is that Slop isn't a report or moderation action. It's just the fun reaction mechanic. The interesting part comes after the swipe. Instead of just discovering a repository, you can go: Project → Developer → Their other projects → GitHub → potentially connect For example, you might randomly discover someone's weird little Python experiment, school project, game, SaaS prototype, open-source library, or unfinished side project. You don't need to already know the developer exists. That's the problem I'd like to solve: GitHub is great for hosting and collaborating on code, but discovering random things people are building isn't really its primary experience. Portfolios are also usually person-first: you have to find the person before seeing their work. This would reverse that: «The project is the introduction. The person behind it is the connection.» MVP The first version could be extremely simple: - GitHub OAuth - User profile - Import/select GitHub repositories - Random project deck - Swipe left = Slop - Swipe right = Slap - Save swipe history - Project details - Developer profile - Links back to GitHub/demo No AI recommendation system, no tags, no complicated algorithm, no chat, no microservices. Just random project discovery for you + swiping + finding the developer behind the project. Later, you could add comments/criticism, suggestions, collaboration, connections, open-source discovery, etc. I think the fun part is the randomness: "What the hell am I going to discover next?" And maybe someone discovers a project they love, finds the person who made it, checks out their other work, and eventually they end up collaborating right? Basically: a dating app, except you're swiping on things people build instead of people. 😂 You can share your thoughts or ideas here, too. Maybe someone can make a prototype or build it submitted by /u/Cresentyt [link] [comments]
