A few months ago I was waiting for my new car to arrive and had an idea: what if there was something like Strava, but for driving? So I started building Tarmac. The car finally arrived in August, and I've been testing the app on pretty much every drive since. A lot of kilometers and probably too much gas later, it's now on TestFlight and getting close to launch. Tarmac automatically detects when you start driving — there's no start button. Once you park, you get your route on a map, distance, duration, average speed, and other stats. You can also add friends and compete in a weekly leaderboard based on distance, driving time, or number of drives. I built the whole thing solo with SwiftUI + Supabase. Surprisingly, the hardest part wasn't the UI. It was getting automatic drive detection to actually work reliably in the background. Core Location + Core Motion can happily decide you're driving while you're sitting on a train, then completely miss a 10-minute drive to the supermarket. I actually built the detection system in isolation before making most of the real app because I figured that if that part didn't work, there wasn't really a product. It's still pre-launch, so I'd genuinely love feedback — especially on the automatic drive detection if anyone gives it a try.
