Two years ago I sat down to consolidate my family's email and fell down a hole. It was spread across 236 backup files and five accounts — 736,000 messages — and once I actually de-duplicated it, half were copies. The unglamorous 80% of the work was the de-duplication (content hashing, not byte-match — so it catches re-compressed photos and re-exported mail that filename/size matching misses) and the "don't silently lose anything" edge cases — like a "redundant" PST backup that secretly held 13,000 unique messages nothing else had.
