Original Summary

I’m currently building a much bigger app and wanted to do a bit of a dry run at taking something from idea > playable > in front of strangers. So last weekend I dug out a word game I invented about 20 years ago. I came up with it while travelling around Europe in a converted ambulance. On long journeys I’d take the three letters from number plates and try to find longer words containing them in the same order , with any number of letters in between. It became a game I’ve continued playing in my head on motorway journeys ever since. I thought turning it into a browser game would make a nice little Saturday afternoon experiment. It escalated. Once I added a 60-second timer, scoring and the ability to shuffle the three letters into different orders, it became much more competitive than I expected. I sent it to a few friends and started getting screenshots back with increasingly ridiculous scores and words. So I redesigned it, added longer-word bonuses, word history, personal records and a few other bits, and somehow I now have an actual game. The video is a full round rather than a carefully chosen highlight reel. I thought it demonstrated the mechanic quite nicely: challenging letters, lots of shuffling, a few satisfying long words, and the inevitable word I should have found afterwards. It’s called Expandagram : https://expandagram.com/ And since the round in the video scored exactly 💯 : if anyone can beat it, post your score in the comments. I’ll give Reddit awards to the first few who do 🏆 I’m building a Daily Challenge next, with the same letters for everyone, leaderboards and the ability to see some of the best words other players found. This is my first time building a game, so I’m interested in what people make of both the game itself and the process of turning a tiny idea into something worth continuing. The original plan was to learn how to ship something before getting back to the bigger app. I’m beginning to suspect the side project has other ideas. submitted by /u/cheekychen [link] [comments]
