Original Summary
I posted about this here a while ago and my link got eaten by the spam filter, so this time the link's in the comments. I'm the design lead on a sleep mask built for side sleepers, the people whose mask ends up on their forehead by 3am. Where it started: a velcro prototype that looked like a sad burrito. Velcro was a mistake: it collects lint, pulls hair, and makes a tearing noise right next to your ear. The unglamorous middle: paper patterns, a scalpel, and a lot of foam cut badly before it was cut well. The lining alone took three rounds. The scary part: aluminium tooling for the eyecups. Once you're paying for machined metal, every curve is a decision you live with. Launch day: our team watching the counter pass the goal in the first few hours. We tried to look calm. It didn't work. What I'd tell anyone building a physical product: Charge something before you build. We asked people to pay $1 to reserve a spot. Over 1,000 did. That told us more than any number of email signups. Let your early users vote, but not on everything. Our reservation holders picked the main colour (black won by a landslide over my favourite, blue). But when they voted to bundle an accessory by default, we made it optional, because far fewer of them actually used it. You can survive a missed deadline. You can't survive silence. We slipped our launch by months. People got frustrated when we stopped posting updates, not when the date moved. Real photos beat renders. Kickstarter's review pushed back on our AI images. Factory and prototype photos did more for trust. Go to the factory. I spent weeks on factory floors in China checking materials against spec. A video call would have missed half of what I caught. Happy to answer anything about tooling, sourcing, or running a pre-launch community. And if you've shipped hardware, what was your velcro moment? submitted by /u/True_Astronaut_2863 [link] [comments]
