I build a trading tool. Paper money, free, nothing being sold in this post and no link in it. Somebody replied to me this morning about their own product and said the thing I have been circling for a month. They have an app that teaches people how stocks work, two months in, zero revenue. Five lessons have to be completed before the practice mode unlocks. I told them to rip the gate out. Then they came back and said, roughly: yeah, now that I think about it I would not use my own app either. That sentence is worth more than any survey either of us could run, and it is the cheapest research in software. It also cost them two months to arrive at, because the onboarding funnel was full of people and the numbers looked like an engagement problem rather than a product one. Here is the shape I think is general, and I am guilty of it too. The thing they built first is the thing that looks like the product. Lessons look like a learning app. Entry rules look like a trading system. It is legible, it demos well, and it is the part a founder can describe at a party. The thing people actually pay for is usually one layer behind it. Nobody pays for lessons about stocks, because YouTube gives those away and does it better. They pay for feedback on their own decisions. Practice mode was the product the whole time and it was sitting behind five lessons of homework. My version of the same mistake, found in my own data this week: I built careful rules for getting into a trade and treated getting out as a detail. The exits turn out to account for a number roughly ten times larger than anything my entries do. I shipped the legible half. The tell is the same in both cases. If the part you are proudest of is the part that resembles a category people already understand, check whether the actual value is in the unglamorous thing you bolted on afterwards and buried. For people further along than two months: when you finally moved the buried thing to the front, did conversion move, or did you just find out faster that the buried thing was not very good either?
