Original Summary
I'm the guy who forgets to charge overnight, walks into a coffee shop with a half-empty Mac, and then sits there not knowing how long I've got, what is draining my MacBook battery, or whether there's anything I can do about it. Activity Monitor has an Energy Impact column, but it's a score with no unit. You can't add it up and you can't turn it into time. coconutBattery tracks battery health and iStat Menus watches the whole machine, but health tells you the size of the tank, and a monitor shows you every gauge at once and leaves the reading to you. Neither says which app to close. So I wrote one for myself, and its main screen got one rule: only what's changing right now and what you can act on. That became 2 numbers per app, the watts it's drawing and the minutes I get back if I close it. I assumed sleep was free. Most nights my Mac loses 2 to 6% asleep, then one loses 38%, and nothing on the Mac says why. So the app logs who woke it and for how long: on the bad night about an hour awake with the lid closed, on a normal night 12 minutes. That turned out to be the question I actually had, whether it's the machine's own housekeeping or something worth hunting. There's a 10-day trial with no card, then WattMate is $19 lifetime or $9.99 a year. The app list and battery health stay free either way. Apple silicon only. https://wattmateapp.com Feel free to ask anything about how it works. submitted by /u/No-Cook-215 [link] [comments]
