Original Summary
I kept losing my friends at festivals, so I built an Android app that doesn't need the internet 🛰️ At large festivals and events I've always found the same thing happens: thousands of people arrive, mobile data becomes painfully slow or stops working entirely, and inevitably I wander off and lose everyone. So I wondered: what if finding your friends didn't depend on the mobile network at all? I built Offlink, an Android app that uses Bluetooth Low Energy to exchange location information between nearby phones. The interesting bit is that the phones form a small offline mesh network. A friend doesn't necessarily have to be within Bluetooth range of you. Location updates can be passed between participating devices and relayed through the crowd. No mobile data. No Wi-Fi. No internet connection. I've spent the last few months testing it across multiple Android phones, including multi-hop tests where devices couldn't communicate directly with each other. After navigating Google's closed-testing process, Offlink is now properly live on Google Play 🎉 I'd really love to get some real-world testing outside my own collection of phones now, particularly at busy events. If you've got an Android phone and fancy trying it, you can download it directly from Google Play: PLAY STORE LINK It's free. If you find a bug, something confusing, or just think something could work better, I'd genuinely like to hear it. And if anyone's interested in the technical side of the Bluetooth mesh, I'm very happy to nerd out about how it works. 😄 submitted by /u/gurprit [link] [comments]
