Original Summary
https://github.com/maakbaas/bullseye Cold Turkey blocker is an awesome program, and I have paid for a license many years ago. But due to some workarounds I found, it became less effective over time. And that is the main drawback, once you know your way around it there is nothing you can do anymore. So then I thought, why not make my own? Despite knowing some workarounds for Cold Turkey blocker, I have always resisted the temptation of looking into how I can actually kill the processes, so using AI, I set up my app with a similar core of a process that can't be killed and restarts itself. In doing this, I tried to walk the fine line (or maybe this is ultimate vibe coding) of wanting to understand as little as possible of the actual implementation, since when using the app myself, I didn't want to know how to kill it as that would defeat the purpose. But I understand enough of it to see that the approach is probably very similar. Then once that core is there, it is easy to block whatever you want, and if you find a workaround or waant to block a new browser, it is just one request to AI to extend the app and add that functionality too. Same for adding new ways to take breaks or schedule a block. The resulting app is pretty cool, you can block distractions on Windows, it is hard to kill and does not rely on any browser extensions. On top of that I added some novel features like being able to block based on a webhook, or on if a USB flash drive is present. When the drive is present it unblocks your settings, and when you take it out the block starts. Then you can hide the flash drive in your shed or car, and add friction in that way. As the fight for productivity is highly personal, I decided to share the source code for the app, so other people can do the same as I did, extend it and make it fit your own use. This is not a commercial offering, so I hope it is allowed here, as all I want to do is help others who struggle with this. If you want to check it out, you can find it on Github . submitted by /u/jazzevacass [link] [comments]
