Original Summary
Well bite me sideways. Apps are increasing visibility, and I got lazy...and uncovered an issue I was assured would work. Last week I found out new users on two of my apps couldn't verify their email. Sign up, wait for the email... nothing. No crash, no error on my side, no alert. A server permission was wrong and the email just never went out. I don't even know how long it was broken. I found it because I tested sign-up myself on a whim. Same week, the Delete Account button on one app did nothing. Then once I fixed that, it crashed. Real users. Live app. Here's what got me. None of it showed up anywhere I was looking. Crash reports were clean. Revenue dashboards looked fine. The failures were silent, and silent is the worst kind, because the user doesn't complain. They just leave. $$$$ LOSS!!! So I changed two things: I built a health page that checks the stuff that actually costs me users and money every 6 hours. Can sign-up emails go out. Are the purchase webhooks still firing. Do my subscription products still match what the app expects. Are any accounts stuck. If anything turns red, it emails me. It already caught one thing I would have missed. Not sure if this is enough, but it's a start. Nothing ships without a written test pass now. SPEND the time to test EVERYTHING. Every app, every release, even small over-the-air fixes. Sign up, sign in, buy, restore, cancel, delete. On the real build, not my dev setup. It slows me down. I'm ok with that. You would think my career in IT would have taught me this. So pissed at myself on this. Who knows what was lost. If you're building something, go sign up for your own app today as a brand new user. Then delete the account and test everything twice!!! You might be surprised. Peace out. submitted by /u/4Cylindertech [link] [comments]
