Original Summary
I never felt comfortable signing up for cloud budgeting apps and having them store all of my financial data on their servers. I also didn't find locally hosted options that I liked using.
That led me to build Maali (https://maali.app) over the past year. It is currently a Mac and Windows app that lets you track spending, budgets, recurring bills, income, net worth, and more. It stores all of your data on your computer.
You can bring your data in by either manually importing bank statement files (CSV/PDF), or by using SimpleFIN, a third-party bridge that you set up once and it keeps your data in sync. Since SimpleFIN introduces a third party that moves your data, I also added a power-user feature where Maali watches a folder (per account) and imports files dropped there, so you can automate downloads however you like and keep everything local.
It also has an optional AI analyst (local Gemma 4 E4B model) that provides commentary on your spending and flags anything unusual about your finances.
I realize that mobile is a big part of convenience for people. Maali lets you set up a phone web app over your own Tailscale network, paired by QR code. I'm also close to launching iOS/Android mobile apps that keep data in sync between the desktop/mobile apps using end-to-end encryption. My goal is to provide a great user experience with maximum convenience without sacrificing privacy.
The full app is free to use for 30 days (no card/signup needed). After that, if you find it useful and want to continue using it, it's $99 one-time. There's a live demo on the site (https://maali.app/today) with synthetic data so you can get a feel for it. Would love to hear any feedback that you have.
