I'm a product manager and I've never written production code. Over the last few days I built digitalruler.dev , a ruler that shows real centimetres and inches on your screen. Claude Code wrote all of the code; I did the research, made the product calls and tested it. Why a ruler: I wanted to learn how to take a small tool from idea to a live site properly, and "online ruler" gets a lot of searches. The popular ones I tried either make you pick your screen model before you can measure, or are simply wrong. One read about 12% off on my MacBook Air. What it does: - Recognises iPhones and Macs and sets the scale automatically - Any other screen: hold a bank card against it and move a slider until it matches, once - cm, inches and pixels, plus a printable ruler with a 50 mm check square - No app, no account How I checked it, since I can't read the code for bugs myself: - Laid a real ruler against a MacBook Air M1, a MacBook Pro 14" and an iPhone 13 Pro. It matched to within a millimetre on all three - The video opens with a photo of that check on the MacBook Air. The phone parts are screenshots of the live site - Printed the printable version and measured it - Every change runs automated tests at phone, tablet and desktop widths What I haven't been able to test: Android, Windows, external monitors. Three things I'd love from you: Put a real ruler or a card against your screen and tell me your device and whether it matched Was anything confusing on the first screen? I suspect there are too many buttons What small free utility do you wish existed? I want to build a few more of these It'll carry ads once Google approves it (that's how it stays free), kept away from the scale.
